Firmness
Firmness determines how much the foam compresses when weight is applied.
A climbing step normally needs more structural support than a floor mat or decorative module.
The right firmness therefore depends on the shape, size, target age and intended play action.
Resilience
Resilience is the foam’s ability to return to its original shape after being compressed.
This matters particularly for soft play climbing blocks, ramps and wedges because they experience repeated loading during normal play.
Dimensional Stability
Foam is only part of the finished structure.
Cutting accuracy, bonding, sewing tension and cover fit can also affect whether a module keeps the intended shape.
A good foam specification can still produce a poor product if those processes are inconsistent.
Should Every Piece Use the Same Foam?
Not automatically.
One of the mistakes we see in soft play development is treating every module in a set as though it performs the same job.
A low crawling block, climbing ramp and tunnel support experience different types of pressure. The foam specification should reflect that.

Soft play sets take up a lot of space relative to their weight. Vacuum compression can significantly reduce shipping volume, but the product must still recover correctly after unpacking.
That means recovery should be tested on the finished module, not just assumed from the raw foam specification.

Different structural roles may need different firmness or recovery characteristics.
4. Build and test the sample
Edges, corners, seams, module alignment and recovery should be checked on the complete product.
5. Test the packaging method
If compression packaging is planned, recovery should be evaluated after the actual packing process.
This approach is more useful than choosing one foam specification first and trying to make every shape fit it.
What Should Buyers Watch for When Choosing a Soft Play Manufacturer?
A few questions can quickly tell you how deeply a manufacturer understands this product category.
Be cautious when a supplier only says “high-density foam” without explaining the specification.
Ask why the same foam is being used if every module in a complex set has a different function.
Confirm that the production materials will match the approved sample.
And pay attention to the questions the supplier asks you.
A manufacturer developing custom soft play sets should want to know the target age, module function, sales market, expected play pattern and packaging method before finalizing the product.
If those questions never come up, the product may be treated as a shape to manufacture rather than a play system to develop.
The Better Question to Ask About Foam
Foam affects the shape, support, recovery, shipping performance and useful life of a soft play set.
So rather than asking:
“Do you use high-density foam?”
Ask:
“Why is this foam right for this module?”
